Twickenham Plantation

Beaufort County, South Carolina

History

History

The land that comprises Twickenham Plantation was originally granted to and purchased by the Izard family in the early 1700’s. As with most plantations in the area, it produced rice throughout the 1800’s. After the Civil War, it fell into disrepair. Since then, it has been transformed into a spectacular southern home and hunting plantation.

The land has been the constant, but its owners and their relatives have been influential in shaping South Carolina and National history throughout the years. They fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and against the Yemassee Indians. They signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Succession. Twickenham has had quite an illustrious history.

The name Twickenham is thought to be derived from the ancestral home of Arthur Middleton in Middlesex, England. Middleton owned the splendid and historic Middleton Plantation on the Ashley River near Charleston. Relatives of Arthur Middleton later lived at Twickenham.
