Ace Basin
Twickenham is located on the southern banks of the Combahee River in the Lowcountry’s ACE Basin. The ACE Basin is a conservation effort designed to protect vital habitats in the water shed of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto (ACE) Rivers. It is the second largest National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The basins of the three rivers encompass 350,000 acres of marsh, swamp and upland in Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton and Hampton Counties. The ACE Basin initiative was started in 1989 and has protected over 150,000 acres to date. Most of the acreage is privately owned and is protected through conservation easements and management agreements with the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited or the South Carolina Open Land Trust.
